The Body Keeps the Score
~ Bessel Van der Kolk, MD

The Body Keeps the Score takes the historical understanding and current research within a lense of humanism to explain how trauma is stored within the body.

Learning first from the experiences of veterans, Dr Bessel Van der Kolk lays down the original presentation of trauma's impact in a population. He explains the anatomy of survival and how the brain and body connections are impacted in negative ways through these overwhelming experiences.

He explores developmental traumas of abuse and neglect, and discusses the aversion of many to remember what their bodies cannot forget.

He doesn't leave the reader without hope however. In his uniquely interwoven research and storytelling: Bessel lays out some methods to move down the pathway toward healing.

This book is a must read for anyone who works with trauma survivors, lives with a trauma survivor, or is a trauma survivor.

Girlhood
~ Melissa Febos

**Alert - This book is intended for mature readers

When the author turned 11 years old and her body began to change, she realized that what she meant to others had changed as well. The author learned to become what had been expected of her by; the boys in her class, the men in her friends homes, and society at large and began to lose herself.

The author takes a look at difficult patterns used to subordinate women for centuries.

In a beautiful blending of memoir, reporting and scholarship the author shares how she reframed experiences and worked to reclaim herself once again.

Though I would caution young readers, this is a book that their mother's should explore as they seek to heal their own wounds and lead their children on a more informed pathway that embodies the entire self.
